Camp Catapult II
A Hands-on Engineering and Robotics Educational Summer Camp
Attending Camp Catapult is not required to take this class.

In Camp Catapult II, students will expand on skills developed in Camp Catapult. These include:

newtons jr apprentice
newtons attic jr apprentice

• The basic physical principles of a catapult or trebuchet
• The design and engineering process
• Introduction to the concept of project scaling
•More sophisticated fabrication processes such as the use of CNC technology to produce intricate components.

Ages 12 - 18 (11 if Camp Catapult has been taken or student has experience with tools.)
Monday-Friday 9:30 to 5:30 (full day camp; students bring lunch)
May 28 - August 10
Location: 4974 Old Versailles Road

Day Camp Description

Camp Catapult warned of flying tennis balls, eggs and bags of Jell-O. Camp Catapult II warns of flying basketballs, watermelons and 10 pound bags of guacamole. Picking up where Camp Catapult left off, part II provides campers with the resources to build a much larger, more powerful and more sophisticated apparatus. Although Camp Catapult is not a prerequisite class, CC II extends skills developed in the introductory camp, including the idea of scaling which involves building larger projects based in smaller ones. Another advance presented here is the use of a CNC milling machine that allows students to create considerably more intricate components such as ratchet based winches and remote triggering devices.

As in Camp Catapult, students receive a kit of wooden, metal and plastic parts, but the components are considerably larger, allowing students to create a floor standing mechanism as big or bigger than they are. Throughout the week, students are instructed on basic physics principles as well as simple engineering concepts and are introduced to hand and power tools in a closely supervised environment.
When students finish their inventions, they field test them, and make changes and improvements based on performance. Students keep their projects after the camp ends. In most cases, Newton's Attic can deliver large projects to campers' homes.

Notes:

  1. Safety glasses or goggles and gloves provided.
  2. Loose clothing, jewelry, and open toed shoes should not be worn. Long hair must be pulled back.
  3. When working with power tools there is always the risk of cuts, scrapes and scratches.
  4. Constant adult supervision will be provided.

Cost:
$325 for 5 full days of camp
