How to Play
Mechanalia is currently under development and not all aspects of the program are in place. Newton's Attic is developing relationships with schools and community organizations to offer participation to anyone interested. Periodic events will be held in Lexington, Louisville and Cincinnati, and anyone from anywhere is invited to participate. The after school classes will occur at specific schools and other locations to be announced later.
Mechanalia is open to any public, private or home school students. Teams may be composed of players from different schools, but all players on a team must be in the one of the following age ranges:
Middle Division: 12 to 15 yrs
High Division: 16 -19 yrs
Exceptions may be made on a case by case basis by review of Newton's Attic personnel.
Stage 1: Form a Team
The first step is to form a team of 3, 4 or 5 players (no fewer than 3, no more than 5). A team can be composed of players from the same school, different schools, or even from other cities. The only restrictions are the team size and the age of each team member.
Stage 2: Register Your Team
Register your team with Newton's Attic. This can be done from any page on the website.

Stage 3: Pay the Team Registration Fee and receive your Gripper Kit After registering your team, submit your team registration fee and acquire your kit. If you register in person at a Newton's Attic public appearance or at school, you will receive your kit at the time and place of registration payment. If you choose to register and pay online, your kit will be mailed to you.
Stage 4: Build and test your gripper
Once you have your gripper kit you may begin creating your arm. Your imagination, knowledge and the contents of your kit are your only limitations. See rules and regulations for more details on the design of your gripper. You will be able to test your gripper on a RAM at various public appearances that will occur during the design and build phase. A schedule of appearances is posted under Public appearances on the home page.
Stage 5: Attend the competition
At the end of the design and build phase, your competition will occur. The event is an all day competition, and your compete times will be announced ahead of time. Your team should arrive at the tournament site well before your first round and be ready to compete when your time arrives. After competing, teams may stay and observe other team strategy or teams may leave and return when the final three qualifying teams are announced. The final round will occur at the end of the event day, with three final teams vying for the cash.
Stage 6: Compete again in the next competition
Any team or team member is free to play as many times as desired. New gripper kits can be purchased or the same gripper from a previous competition may be used in multiple events. Teams are free to redesign or alter their gripper from competition as long as all rules are met. There is no limit as to how often a team may compete, and team registration fee is required for each competition.
